Last Tuesday The United States Department of Agriculture confirmed another case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy BSE aka mad cow disease in a dairy cow in California. At the time the infected cow was not a aparent threat to humans. This is the nations fouth confirmed case since 2003 this disease can be fatal to the humans who consume the contaminated meat.This animal was never presented for slaughter for human consumpstion so at no time it showed a risk to the food supply or human health. The cow was found at a rendering plant which takes sickly or sub standard animal meat and recycles it into inedible products. This was a very rare form of the disease and not asscociated with feed. This is not expected to affect the U.S.trade in beef. Worldwide cases of BSE started in 1992 with 37,311 confirmed cases. In 2011 there were 29 cases mostly the cause tainted feed according to the USDA.
We think this is imporant because it could pf caused a epidemic. What if the infected cow was slaughtered then it could of poisonend tons and killed many. Also if the contaminated meat was shipped out of the country it would of affected other countries as well. The U.S would lose and ally and mabye start something bigger. Were thankful that they caught this or it would have been bad news for the U.S.
