Riot at Soccer Game in Egypt

On February 1, 2012, a riot broke out in Egypt at a soccer game. Seventy-four were killed and thousands more were injured. The soccer game was held at a stadium in Port Said. The home team Al-Masry beat Cairo's Al-Ahly team 3-1. Fans from both teams threw rocks and chairs at each other. Many of the people, who had died, fell from the bleachers in the stadium. Many people also suffocated from the thousands of people crowding around them. The fans from the team Al-Masry had rocks, glass bottles, knives, swords, and even guns, with which they threw at the opposing team’s players. At least forty-seven people were arrested after this. Authorities only caused further violence. Police stood around while ambulances arrived late. The two teams were and still are long-time rivals. When Al - Ahly’s rare win occurred, the fans of Al-Masry ran out onto the field. There were many fist-fights that occurred between the two sides of fans. The fans of Al-Masry attacked the players but some of them rushed to safety.

This event was a horrible incident. The soccer league needs to make new rules to solve this issue with the fans. The fans should be separated completely in the stadiums. It is so sad to see seventy-four fans die over something so simple. Fans shouldn’t be so worried about winning or losing. They should just be there to cheer on their team. The world would be a better place if fans would just cooperate with each other. This event was tragic. The fans that killed people should be put in jail. This one little game was life changing to many people.
