Shooting at Western Psych.By Julia S. and Izzy H.
On March 8, 2012 a man entered a Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of UPMC in Oakland shortly before 2 p.m. He was armed with 2 handguns and started firing. Within minutes he was dead after a gun battle with University of Pittsburgh police, but not before one Western Psych employee was shot to death and seven other people were injured. The only one that was killed was Michael Schaab along with the Pitt police officer that was grazed by a bullet. City police who arrived shortly after the Pitt officers said it was a chaotic scene in the hospital lobby, with blood splattered floors and people running in different directions. Officers said they saw two men dead in the hallway where one of the walls had bullet holes in it. A third man was holding his ankle saying he been shot, and a woman fell and broke her arm while trying to run away from the shooter. The two men that died were lying near each other and were facing the same direction. Later, the police identified shooter as John Shick, a local man.

It’s heart breaking to see this tragic event happen. When you think the shooter (John Shick) was a local man. There are too many of these shootings happening and it is sad, so we need to stop it somehow. One of the people dead was Michael Schaab, an employee at Pittsburgh psychiatric hospital. He was just engaged on Valentine’s Day. It’s hard to see someone die so young and that still has a bright future. It’s important for us to recognize how people you may trust can come back right on you or your city. Now since this happened we might have to have metal detectors in front of hospitals or even people checking the bags. It’s hard to say but if we don’t do anything about this it just might keep happening or even getting worse.
